Tonight at Mohawk Austin-based post-psychedelic-art-rock band Casual Strangers are celebrating the release of their debut self-titled album. They will have opening support from recently formed female-fronted Löwin, which features Sara Houser, formerly of The Couch (now Otis The Destroyer). San Marcos-based Chasca closes the night’s showcase.
Casual Strangers may look familiar to those who follow the Austin indie scene. The group sprung from longtime psych-rock outfit, The Boxing Lesson. They formed after original Boxing Lesson drummer Jake Mitchell was released from jail after serving time for marijuana charges. In Casual Strangers, Mitchell is joined by Boxing Lesson bandmates Paul Waclawsky (guitar/vocals), Jaylinn Davidson (synth, bass) and new vocalist Katy Gunn.
Their debut album will be officially released digitally and to the general public on July 22. The group recorded the album live in order to record in four days with producer Chris Frenchie Smith. Casual Strangers will be available digitally, CD and on vinyl to be pressed in the fall.
Mohawk is located at 912 Red River Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. $7 cover at the door. Visit the Facebook event page here.
