Cine Las Americas International Film Festival presents the screening of the film Reaching for the Moon (Flores Raras) at the Alamo Drafthouse Village on Sunday, Jan. 19, in recognition of director Bruno Barreto. The screening is part of the Cine Las Americas Signature Series.
The film chronicles the tendentious love affair between two artistically talented women, American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Elizabeth (Miranda Otto), a Pulitzer Prize winner, travels to Rio de Janiero where she attempts to find new inspiration to write. It is there in Rio where she falls in love with notable architect, Lota (Glória Pires). Though their love is deep, complications arise as the world around them ridicules and judges their love. The story captures the passion of their love in a time of sexual orientation prejudice.
The Alamo Drafthouse Village is located on 2700 W. Anderson Ln. Tickets can be purchased online through the Cine Las Americas website or Alamo Village Box Office. Tickets for Cine Las Americas members are $8; for non-members tickets are $10. For more information on the event visit Cine Las Americas website.
