Your Friday night plans just got a little more exciting. This Friday, August 2, Red River Noise will be hosting its first installment of live soul showcases at Spider House Ballroom. Our first ever “Super Soul Party” has a lineup composed of three of the best bands Texas has to offer. We’ve got Latasha Lee & The Blackties, ROXY ROCA and Afrofreque ready to get you moving to their sultry sounds all night.
Opening the show Friday night will be Afrofreque, a hip-hop/soul group from Austin that incorporates a little bit of funk, Afrobeat and reggae in their tunes. Fronted by MC Tigre Liu, the group is composed of Claude9, Resinthol, John Siebenthaler, Fumi Sugawara and Mike Hale. After our sister publication (Austin Vida) hosted them for their Free Week Showcase this past January, we knew we needed them for our soul party. The major part of the Afrofreque experience is catching the group live as they create such a funky and positive atmosphere. While they keep their hip-hop and soul compositions tight, their live improvs are what steal the show. Don’t be late!
Following Afrofreque will be classic powerhouse soul band ROXY ROCA. When lead vocalist Taye Cannon started putting the band together, he had a chance meeting with veteran Austin guitar slinger Errol Siegel and asked him if he wanted to start a soul band. Once Siegel agreed, the rest fell into place. By the end of it, they had Siegal on guitar, Roger Wuthrich on bass, Greece native Nik Bouklas on tenor sax, Bob Villwock on keys, Tom Hays on trombone, Ryan Allen on alto sax and most recently, long-time drummer for Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma and Brownout, Johnny Lopez. Since coming together, ROXY ROCA has performed with artists like B.B. King, Fitz and The Tantrums, Brownout, The Monophonics and more.
Closing the night will be Latasha Lee & The Blackties. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas but raised in Austin, Latasha signed onto Universal platinum producer Salih Williams’ production company Carnival Beats in 2006. With classic inspirations like Sam Cooke, Etta James, Gladys Knight and many more, Latasha and Salih began to create a new sound with the core of the greats.
Since creating her sound, Latasha was one of the top 50 to make it to the television show the X-Factor in 2012. This fall, Latasha Lee & The Blackties were chosen to play one weekend of the Austin City Limits Festival, which is huge for any artist but especially for those based out of Texas’ capital. If you need any more reasons to not miss out on Latasha Lee, just think Amy Winehouse with an old soulful twist.
Spider House Ballroom is located at 2906 Fruth St. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music starts at 10 p.m. All ages are welcome. The cover is $7 at the door. DJ Resinthol from Afrofreque will be spinning before and in-between sets.
