Trying to describe Austin-based rock band Megafauna always presents a challenge as they fuse so many rock elements together with a soft, yet sultry female vocals. Some call it noise rock. Some call it blues-rock. The simplest label to quickly sum it up is “experimental grunge rock.” Most of the time I just tell friends and colleagues that Megafauna sound like “an amazing clusterfuck of rock genres coming together in the battle for Middle Earth with Arwen on vocals and guitar.” Yeah, so my friends and I nerds.
Megafauna was formed in 2008 by Connecticut born, Brooklyn transplant Dani Neff. The current reincarnation of the band is composed of Neff (guitar), Zach Humphrey (drums) and Greg Yancey (bass). The most recent release, Surreal Estate, was a local tastemaker fav and has their fans on edge for the next album which is going to be titled Get Free. I’m especially drooling over the release as it was recorded with the incredible Ikey Owens from Free Moral Agents and of Mars Volta fame.
Watch Megafauna live at the “Future of Indie” day party at Güero’s Taco Bar on March 12. These Austinites will begin their set at 7 p.m. RSVP on Facebook here and you could win a $20 Güero’s gift card. The event is all ages. No cover and no wristbands needed.
