Leaving aside the rivers of Lonestar, the attractive people letting said booze guide their genitals and getting to see some of your favorite acts for free, the best thing about Austin music fests like SXSW and Free Week is the insanely eclectic mix of performers that end up playing together at each show. Forget seeing five similar-sounding indie bands in a row- up in an ATX fest, we like our genres mixed and crossbreeding like musical rabbits. Keepin’ true to that ever-so-Austin idea, the North Door on the east side is throwing a Free Week show on Saturday Jan 5 with Lost Soul Revue, DJ Chorizo Funk and Bumping Uglies, three distinct acts with each their own sound.
For their part of things, Lost Soul Revue is the answer to your prayers to see a real live, actual damn soul band again before you die. This multi-singer, multi-piece ensemble is made up of members of other acts that just can’t resist the urge to play a lil’ old fashioned soul now and again, and their covers are some top-notch goodness. Also on the lineup is the winner of 2012’s Lords of Wax competition to find Austin’s best DJ, a man who goes by DJ Chorizo Funk. Chorizo plays a dynamic mix of damn near errthang, blending it all with a 21st century sense of style and composition. Rounding out the night is Bumping Uglies, which is most definitely not a white boy reggae band (as it shows on Do512), but is actually some sort-of theatrical, whimsical pop-rock group reminiscent of a spazzier, harsher, less circus-y Dresden Dolls with electro tendencies (which I guess is a pretty good description for MSI, but this is way less early 2000’s than all that noise).
This here shindig is gonna blow roof off the ND at 501 N I35 and starting at 7 p.m tonight. Of course it is totally free for those of age (“young folks” pay $5). Get out there and take advantage of all this excellent, free-ass shit, Austin.
