Tonight pop-punk takes over Red 7 with longtime veterans Smoking Popes performing a headlining show. The Chicago-based quartet is primarily composed of three brothers, Josh (vocals/guitar), Eli (guitar) and Matt (bass) Caterer. In 2008, drummer extraordinaire Neil Hennessy (The Lawrence Arms) joined the band.
What made Smoking Popes stand out from the rest of the Hot Topic mall pop, cookie cutter bands of the ’90s was their punk rock meets classic American crooner fusion that eventually became their signature sound. One of their best records, if not their best, 1994’s Born To Quit, was reissued via SideOneDummy Records last month. Tonight’s tour is in support of the reissue and will be the only place you can get one of 200 copies of Born To Quit on blue vinyl.
Co-headlining with Smoking Popes are Chunksaah Records‘ newest rising stars Luther. The Philadelphia-based power pop band are performing in support of their debut full-length, titled Let’s Get you Somewhere Else. Although relatively young, the group has managed to impress some punk rock heavyweights garnering invites to tour with Hot Water Music, Braid and even The Bouncing Souls.
Red 7 is located at 611 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages are welcome. Tickets are $10 Advance/$12 Day of Show.
