The tidal wave of success that greeted The Weeknd in 2011 has yet to crest. The Canadian R&B singer went from uploading his music on YouTube in 2010 to seemingly becoming Drake’s protégé overnight, and will be performing at Austin Music Hall on October 13. After releasing three critically acclaimed mixtapes, providing guest vocals for nearly half a dozen songs on Take Care, and going on tour throughout Europe, the 22-year-old has since signed to Universal Republic with his debut album, Trilogy, set to release in mid-November.
The Weeknd’s music is evocative and aggressive, definitely not your typical dance-pop R&B. His lyrics focus on the darker realms of celebrity and illustrate the sensuousness of such a lifestyle. One can anticipate a multitude of beautiful women swaying to the debauched vocals of Abel Tesfaye on Saturday night, maintaining their rhythm amidst the spacey synthesizer sounds and his soporific, drug-induced harmonies.
